The workers are paid for every item completed under the belief that every piece deserves a price and every lady deserves to be paid for her time and handiwork. This lovely hand knitted octopus was made with loving care to provide a beautiful gift for any child or adult!
The range includes: Jungle Elephant, Jungle Zebra, Jungle Leopard, Jungle Lion and Jungle Monkey
These teddies are made by a small fair trade project that started in Njoro, Kenya, in 1998, to help rural women find some much needed form of income using their spinning and knitting skills. The group buys homespun wool produced locally and knits it into toys, bed-covers, jerseys, socks, scarves, hats and other accessories. All the toys meet CE safety standards.
Njoro is mainly a farming area. Agricultural work for the men is easier to come by than for the women-folk, yet agricultural wages are insufficient to support large and extended families. This group generates two forms of income; buying the wool and then turning it into a marketable product. The money goes direct into the hands of the women who are thus able to improve the quality of their lives.

This lovely hand knitted elephant was made with loving care to provide a beautiful gift for any child or adult!
These jungle teddies are made by a small fair trade project that started in Njoro, Kenya, in 1998, to help rural women find some much needed form of income using their spinning and knitting skills. The group buys homespun wool produced locally and knits it into toys, bed-covers, jerseys, socks, scarves, hats and other accessories. All the toys meet CE safety standards.
The group enables its workers to directly benefit from their efforts. Knitting is ideal; it requires minimal equipment and can be done when time permits. When the rains come and the family crops and vegetables need tending, not much knitting gets done. Now, in times of drought and crop failure, when the family garden is bare of supplementary vegetables, money can be earned to purchase the necessities of life.
Kenya is still very much a male orientated society where the wife and family may have little claim on a man’s earnings. A woman’s lot in the rural area is a hard one – no running water or readily available fuel for cooking; no transport to the market place; very little access to basic medical attention; school fees, books and uniforms to purchase – and certainly no money left over for any small luxury.

Colleen Redit, who began CMCT in 1964, writes, ‘Our motto is, “Where there is no vision the people perish.” My aim was to teach vocational skills to poor communities, to give them independence and self-esteem. I began the Haven of Hope Handicraft Centre (run by CMCT) in a garage in Chennai.’
At the Centre more than 100 women and girls are trained and employed in tailoring and embroidery. There is also a hostel that is home to those who have nowhere else to live.
Since its humble beginnings in a garage, the women are now housed in a purpose built centre, enabling CMCT to minister on a bigger scale and in a pleasant environment.
