Gaby Ceramic Bead Necklace (18in) Zebra

Long a symbol of the wild African plains, the spirit of the zebra is encapsulated in this beautiful necklace from Kazuri. The stunning beads, fired and hand-painted by Kenyan women, reflect the true, dynamic beauty of Africa.

Kazuri means ‘small and beautiful’ in Swahili, and these pieces of jewellery certainly evoke those sentiments. It is a member of the British Association for Fair Trade Shops (BAFTS) and has been creating its beads since 1975.

Kazuri’s workshop is based in Karen, a stunning area of beauty a few miles outside of Nairobi which lies under the Ngong Hills, nestling in between Kenya’s capital and the spectacular Rift valley.

Set up by the late Lady Susan Wood to create employment for single mothers in the area, each one of Kazuri’s beads is shaped by hand, hand painted, and crafted with care and attention to detail.

The nature of the jewellery ensures that every bead is unique and often takes on the quirks and characteristics of the local women who make them, meaning that these attractive beads have a story to tell and a soul to them, as well as their obvious beauty.
